Can you believe it? We discovered that there are many kick ass cafes and hostels erected in Edinburgh , part of the Salvation Army. Who knew? Obviously we were destined to visit this wonderful, sprawling city.
This particular location is in Grassmarket square area, where we have stayed for three nights. We move today to join the fringe group. It’s been very restful to spend three nights in this bustling area, in a charming hotel with triple paned windows, allowing us to see ( but not hear) the action. It’s filled with centuries old pubs with a remarkable history. It’s very busy, day and night, filled with tourists and wannabe stars of the future, showing us their talents on the streets of this two block oval area, located in the shadows of Edinburgh Castle. It’s the oldest part of the city, and, to my mind, the most quaint.
Here’s what I have managed to capture on our time spent here.
We spent the last two days on the BigBus hop on & off bus. We didn’t hop off the first day. We just rode around the city on the redline, taking in the views from the top of the bus. The second day we had a destination: the Royal Botanical Gardens, on the blue line, where we hopped off for lunch. Here are a few snaps to show you. The weather has been perfect: temperatures in the 60s with light breezes. Fingers crossed it stays like this.
Back at the Grassmarket, we zipped over to a charming Italian cafe to use the facilities and indulge in a delicious decaf cappuccino!
Yesterday we went to the Royal Botanical Gardens and indulged in a cheese board for two.
..and two desserts! I couldn’t resist the shortbread!
This scavenger was hoping that our eyes were bigger than our stomach. They were, but we got a doggie bag.
Back on the bus, back to Grassmarket for a rest and get ready for dinner! Since it was our last night we wanted to go to a French country cafe where the French onion soup was authentic and the dessert was divine! There was no decaf coffee so we had peppermint tea.

Time to get up and start a new day. The Fringe festival tour begins!
Look like an interesting destination. Scotland is on my to do list. In the meantime I am nursing back pain/surgery so home for 8 more weeks. You know how that feels !
